Steps to Miles Calculator
Convert steps to miles and kilometers, or miles back into steps
Convert a step count into miles and kilometers, or turn a distance back into steps. Step length is the distance from one footfall to the next. From height, that length is height in inches × 0.413. For pace from a finish time, use the pace calculator.
Calculator Inputs

How to use this calculator
- Choose steps to miles, or miles to steps.
- Estimate step length from height, or type the length you measured.
- Read miles, kilometers, and the step length used.
How the calculation works
Miles = steps × step length in inches ÷ 12 ÷ 5,280. Kilometers are miles × 1.609344. The reverse divides the distance by the same step length.
The 0.413 factor is a walking estimate, not a measured gait. A taller person gets a longer step. A measured step length is more accurate than the height estimate.
10,000 steps in miles
At a height of 70 inches, step length is 28.91 inches. Ten thousand of those steps is 4.56 miles, or 7.34 kilometers. A shorter step length covers fewer miles in the same step count.
Worked example
10,000 steps at 70 inches tall
70 × 0.413= 28.91 inches10,000 × 28.91 ÷ 12 ÷ 5,280= 4.56 miles4.56 × 1.609344= 7.34 kmTips & Best Practices
- •Measure ten steps and divide by ten if you want a personal step length.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
It depends on step length. At 70 inches of height, the estimate is 4.56 miles. Enter your height or a measured step length for your own count.
What is step length versus stride length?
On this page, step length is one footfall to the next, which is what a step counter counts. A stride, same foot to same foot, is about two steps. Step-counter charts often call the one-step distance a stride.
How is step length estimated from height?
Step length in inches is height in inches × 0.413. You can replace that estimate with a length you measured.
