Gravel Calculator
Calculate cubic yards and tons of gravel from length, width, and depth
This gravel calculator turns length, width, and depth into cubic yards and tons. Crushed stone is figured at 1.4 tons per cubic yard, which is a typical loose bulk weight. For a concrete slab, use the concrete calculator. For garden beds, use the mulch calculator.

How to use this calculator
- Choose feet and inches, or meters and centimeters.
- Enter the area length, width, and the depth of gravel you want.
- Pick crushed stone, pea gravel, or a custom tons-per-yard density from the supplier.
How the calculation works
Volume in cubic feet is length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12). Cubic yards are that volume ÷ 27. Tons are cubic yards × the material density.
The 1.4 and 1.3 ton figures are typical loose bulk weights, not a quarry ticket. Wet stone, compaction, and the actual rock change the weight. The supplier’s weight per cubic yard should replace the preset when you have it.
How much gravel is in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. At 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that yard of crushed stone weighs about 2,800 pounds. A 2-inch layer over 120 square feet is 20 cubic feet, or 0.74 cubic yards.
Depth for a path or driveway
A walking path is often about 2 inches of gravel. A light driveway base is often thicker. This tool does not add waste. Ordering about 5 to 10 percent extra covers spillage and an uneven base.
Worked example
12 ft × 10 ft at 2 inches of crushed stone
12 × 10 × (2 ÷ 12)= 20 cubic feet20 ÷ 27= 0.74 cubic yards0.74 × 1.4= 1.04 tonsTypical loose weight
Supplier weights override these presets.
| Material | Tons per cubic yard |
|---|---|
| Crushed stone | 1.4 |
| Pea gravel | 1.3 |
Tips & Best Practices
- •Measure depth in the same units the form asks for: inches with feet, or centimeters with meters.
- •Compacted gravel takes more stone than the loose volume of the hole.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
Crushed stone is typically about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Pea gravel is typically about 1.3 tons. Use a custom density if the supplier publishes a different weight.
How do I calculate cubic yards of gravel?
Multiply length and width in feet by depth in feet, then divide by 27. Depth in inches is converted by dividing by 12 first.
Should I order extra gravel?
The result is the geometric volume. Ordering about 5 to 10 percent more covers an uneven base and spillage.
