Plastic Waste Calculator
Estimate your annual plastic waste generation
Count the single-use plastic items you throw away in a typical week (bottles, carrier bags, food containers, wrappers) and the calculator converts them into an annual item count and an estimated weight in kilograms and pounds. The item counts are exact multiples of what you enter; the weight is an estimate based on a typical mass for each item type.

Weights use fixed typical masses per item and will differ from your actual waste. The tool covers four categories of single-use packaging only.
How It Works
Weekly grams = bottles × 12 g + bags × 5 g + containers × 30 g + wrappers × 2 g. Annual kg = weekly grams × 52 ÷ 1,000; pounds = kg × 2.20462. The per-item masses are mid-range figures: a 500 ml PET water bottle weighs roughly 10 to 15 g, a thin HDPE grocery bag 5 to 8 g, a rigid takeaway or yoghurt tub 20 to 40 g, and a film snack wrapper 1 to 3 g.
Why the weight is lower than you might expect
Single-use packaging is light by design. The default inputs (5 bottles, 10 bags, 5 containers, 15 wrappers a week) come to 1,820 items a year but only about 15 kg, roughly the weight of two bowling balls. Item count is often the more useful number for thinking about litter and recycling effort; weight matters more for carbon footprint and landfill volume. Heavier household plastics such as detergent bottles, toys, and electronics casings are not included here.
Putting the figure in context
The OECD Global Plastics Outlook (2022) estimates that only about 9% of plastic waste worldwide is recycled; around 19% is incinerated, nearly 50% goes to sanitary landfill, and the remaining 22% is mismanaged (dumped, burned in the open, or leaked to the environment). Per-person plastic waste generation varies widely by country, from well under 20 kg a year in low-income countries to over 200 kg a year in the United States when all packaging and products are included.
Worked example
Default inputs: 5 bottles, 10 bags, 5 containers, 15 wrappers per week
5 × 12 + 10 × 5 + 5 × 30 + 15 × 2= 290 g290 g × 52 ÷ 1,000= 15.1 kg (33.2 lb)(5 + 10 + 5 + 15) × 52= 1,820 itemsReplacing the 5 weekly bottles with a refillable one removes 260 bottles and about 3.1 kg a year from this total.
Tips & Best Practices
- •A refillable bottle removes 52 × (your weekly bottle count) bottles a year; at 3 a week that is 156 bottles, at 5 a week 260.
- •Bags are light but numerous; a single reusable tote used for a year typically replaces several hundred thin bags.
- •Rigid containers (PET #1, HDPE #2, PP #5) are the most widely recycled types; films and wrappers are rarely accepted in household recycling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the weight only an estimate?
Because packaging varies. A 2-litre bottle weighs three to four times as much as a 500 ml one, and a thick clamshell container can weigh twice the 30 g assumed. The calculator uses one typical mass per category; if you want a closer figure, weigh a week's worth of each type on a kitchen scale and scale the result yourself.
Does recycling reduce the number shown?
No. The calculator counts plastic you use and discard, whether it goes in the recycling bin or the rubbish. Recycling changes where the plastic ends up, not how much you used.
What is not counted?
Anything outside the four categories: bottles for cleaning products or toiletries, coffee-cup lids, straws, cutlery, cling film used at home, microfibres from washing synthetic clothing, and the plastic embedded in durable goods. For most households these add a meaningful amount on top of the figure shown.
