How It Works
We use the Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas. These were originally developed for calculating drug dosages but are widely used to estimate healthy body weight. We also calculate the "Healthy BMI Range" (BMI 18.5 - 25).
Tips & Best Practices
- •These formulas do not account for muscle mass or body frame size.
- •Athletes may weigh more than the "ideal" due to muscle, which is healthy.
- •Treat the result as a general range, not a strict target.
- •The BMI range (18.5-24.9) is the broadest and most commonly used medical standard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which formula is the most accurate?
The Devine formula is the most widely used medically. However, no single formula is perfect for everyone, which is why we show you results from multiple methods.
Why is the range so wide?
Healthy bodies come in many shapes and sizes. The BMI range accounts for different frame sizes and muscle compositions, providing a safe weight zone rather than a single "perfect" number.
