A marathon under 4:00:00 means an average of 5:41 per kilometer, or 9:09 per mile, for all 42.195 km (26.219 miles). One second per kilometer slower than 5:41 costs about 42 seconds by the finish. The goal is the average, not a fast first 10K.
This page is the arithmetic of the goal. It does not make the time achievable. Hills, heat, and under-training move the clock later.
Even splits at 5:41/km
| Marker | Time |
|---|---|
| 5K | 28:26 |
| 10K | 56:53 |
| Half (21.0975 km) | 2:00:00 |
| 30K | 2:50:38 |
| 40K | 3:47:31 |
| Last 2.195 km | 12:29 |
| Finish | 4:00:00 |
Each full 5K is 28:26 if the pace stays even. The piece after 40K is shorter than a 5K, so it is not another 28 minutes.
Coming through halfway in 1:55:00 has already spent the margin. The second half would then need to be 2:05:00 or faster. Many first marathons slow by more than that. The marathon pace calculator and the split calculator print the same even plan in kilometers or miles.
What a shorter race implies
Riegel’s formula, which the race time predictor uses, scales a recent result with a small slowdown as the distance grows. A 25:00 5K projects a marathon just under four hours. That projection assumes you are trained to run 42 km, not only 5 km. A half marathon near 1:55 is a more direct rehearsal, because you have already held a pace close to 5:41/km for 21 km. The predictor is a ceiling until the long runs match the distance.
How long a marathon takes has the chart from 2:30 through 6:00 if 4:00 is one row among several. Average marathon times by age puts 4:00 in a wide recreational window. How to calculate running pace is the division if you want to check a watch split by hand.
